Essay re the gardens and lush landscaping that distinguished the streets and neighborhoods of antebellum Columbia, S.C. Columbia's lost horticultural history is argued to be as significant as that of Charleston; topics discussed include the British influence on South Carolina's landscape design, and the celebrated gardens of Mary Cantey Hampton on property now known as the Hampton-Preston House, and those of Robert E. Russell, who from 1836 to 1854, operated a public botanical garden and nursery on the grounds of the Statehouse.
